Erwin Perzy I was a surgical instrument mechanic and inventor. In the search for the cold light, he experimented with a cobbler ball to increase the light output of the then new carbon filament lamp. This cobbler’s ball was a glass ball with a tubular end filled with water, and therefore looked like a magnifying glass. Erwin Perzy I added various substances to the water, which should reflect the light. So he found, among other things, Gries, which slowly dropped down nicely. This effect reminded him of snowfall. Since he had already made a model of Mariazellerkirche for a friend, he gave this church in the ball, and so a snow globe was born. He called his invention GLASS BALL WITH SNOW EFFECT. The famous WIENER SILVESTERGUSS was one of his inventions. The old custom of lead casting on New Year’s Eve inspired him to search for a slightly melting alloy so that the metal could be melted with a candle flame. Because of these two ideas, our company was founded around 1900. A few years later, Erwin Perzy I even received a tribute from the Emperor for his work. Erwin Perzy II took over the business after World War II and began exporting to America, Canada and Australia. Today, in the third and fourth generation, we continue to operate and proudly say that our snow globes are also popular in Japan, America and the Arab world. Since every snow globe is still handmade today, each ball is as unique as a single snowflake. ✨
